Putting some words on a page.

Since the Welcome page is the first page that most visitors will see it is only fitting that the Welcome page be the first page you put some text on.

Go to your Wnki Admin Center
When you type the address http://www.yourwebsite.com/admin into your location bar you should see a password verification window such as the one on the left. If this doesn't work and you get a 404 error telling you that the page doesn't exist, make sure you did not type in "yourwebsite". Make sure to replace the "yourwebsite" part with your website's name. If your website's name is "SiliconEstates.Com" you would use http://www.siliconesstates.com/admin. If you did that and you still get a 404 then perhaps you have not be Wnki-ized. Or, in the words of the great Jimi Hendrix "Have you been Wnkied?". If not contact your webmaster and/or a Wnki representitive.

Enter your username and password
When you were setup with a Wnki-ized you should have been given a username and password. Enter those into the password verification popup and all should go well. If you don't manage to enter a proper username/password combination that you'll see a popup similar to the one here.

Finally arrive at Start Center
There are three key areas on this screen. Near the top is the "Click Here" to Start link. In the middle of the screen are some help and manual links. One of the links will bring you help. But you're already here aren't you. The bottom of the screen as a link to "Advanced" Functions. Ignore that for the moment.

Click on "Click Here" to jump to "Start" page
This hypertext link will take you to the actual Wnki center. We use this intermediate link for security.

Find the "PageEdit" menu option

Every Wnki admin page has a full menu at the top of the screen. Find the "PageEdit" menu option (far left) and click on it.

Look in file list for index.html
Index.html (your welcome page) is the most important page in your website. Might as well start there. It's as good a place to begin as any.

Click on the radio button to left of index.html
When you click on the radio button it will put a dark spot in the center indicating that index.html is the selected file. This is what we want. If you experiment a little you'll notice that the form will only allow you to select a single file. If you click on a different radio button the previously selected file is unselected. This is because we can only edit one file at a time.

Click on "Click here to activate selected option" button
Near the top of the screen is a long button labeled "Click here to activate selected option." The selected option in this case is "Safer Edit." For this example leave the selection set to "Safer Edit." Later we shall address "Advanced" Edit.

Study "Safer" Edit screen for a moment
Take a moment to look at the "Safer" Edit screen. The Safer Edit typically has three long boxes at the top of the screen and one larger box in the middle of the screen. This is shown in the image at the left.

The top three boxes are Title, Meta-Desc, and Meta-Keywords. These can be ignored for now. Later you may refer to "Meta Stuff" to learn how to properly fill in these fields. For the moment the default values will be fine. Let's get on to that main edit box.

We are here poised on the brink of creation. Do it. Type something into this box. Something sensible, or something non-sensical. The choice is yours. You are the one in control of decoratoring your site. Just keep in mind that you are publishing to the internet. Which means any and every one can see your pages. So be appropriate to your integrity and ethics.

Click on "Click to SAVE Above Edit Changes" to save

Clicking on this button will send your changes to the internet server to be saved. If for some reason you'd like to runaway without saving changes use the Cancel Edit Button. After your changes are saved the Wnki system will take you back to the PageEdit File Selection screen.

On the "Page Edit File Selection" screen locate the index.html file in the list. Notice the "<--View" to the right of index.html. Right click on this button and you'll be presented with a popup menu.

The top option on this popup menu is "Open in New Window." That is the option we want. By opening the index.html page in a new window this will allow us to flip back and forth between an "Edit" window and a "View" window. Be sure to use the Reload button if you aren't seeing your change. If you don't see your changes it is mostly likely because your browser is still looking at a locate cached copy of the page. Try reload or refresh the page. In Netscape to guarantee reload, hold the shift key down and click on the refresh/reload button.

Congratulations you have edited a website and published to the internet.
