Page EditEntering Wnki's PageEdit you will be presented with a screen much like the one on the right. From this screen you can select a file to edit. Wnki will grab that file from the server, preprocess it, serve it up toasted for you to edit, then take your edits and stuff them back on the server. (Click Here for Demo). Wnki has two edit modes available. One called "Advanced" and one called "Safer". Contrary to anything you may have been told there is no such thing as safe -- it's all relative.
Wnki PageEdit opens with the "SaferEdit" option selected. You can switch between this mode and "Advanced" by clicking on the appropriate radio button prior to clicking the famouse "Click here to activate selected option" button. For a full description of the differences between the two modes see "SaferEdit" Edit and "Advanced" Edit.
If you click on the activate button before selecting a file you'll be gently reminded to "Select a file" first. You can select a file by clicking on a round radio button next to the name of the file you wish to edit. If you don't wish to edit any files you may either use the browser's back button or you can use the "Cancel/Edit" button.
The actual edit screen will look something like the screen on the right. You will always be presented with Title, Meta-Description, and Meta-Keywords fields for edit. These are some of the most neglected fields in you webpages. If you don't believe me just look at those for this page. ;-) At least, the non-update of title and Meta-Description will not be for lack of opportunity. These fields are used by some search engines for placement of your pages in the index listings. So they are somewhat important. However, after a few zillion pages it's hard not to just tab right on by these fields heading for the all important main page text -- that will typically be in the big white box.
Underneath the text edit fields is a box such as the one below.
You have two basic choices "Save Edit Changes" or "Cancel Edit" and run away. (A Win-Key: Many of us have found it quite comfortable to open two browser windows when working with PageEdit. One browser window has the editing page and the other browser window has the standard page view. After making changes we click reload to check out the changes in full screen. This allows for easy back and forth editing.
After your site begins to grow your file list may get a bit too long for comfortable file selection. If this is the case you can narrow the file display by entering a desired folder name using the "Target Directory" selection box. When the directory is displayed it will be restricted to files in the folder. This can help to focus one's view on areas being edited.
If your site gets to this size you should congratulate yourself on a job well done first because you've obviously made a substancial website and second you have undoubtedly picking up a few tricks along the line and are well on the way toward becoming a rather competent web-decorator.
